The Old Church Tower (aka the Sunken Church)
The Old Church Tower is also known locally as the ‘Sunken Church’. This is in the belief that the rest of the church had sunk leaving only the tower standing. In reality the rest of the church was demolished shortly after Bramcote’s new church, St Michael and All Angels, was built in the 1860’s.
There has been a church on the site since at least the 13th century with the tower itself having window styles typical of the 13th and 14th centuries.
The Tower Arts Project is a project to design and provide seating and interpretation panels that reflect the heritage of the Tower and its habitat, and to commission a stained glass window. The project will be undertaken by a professional artist, appointed by a selection panel chaired by Broxtowe’s Arts Development Officer, who will work with local schools and an adult arts enterprise group. There are also plans for a Physick Garden which will be underwritten by David Bennett and students at Foxwood School and local primary schools. This would be a raised-bed installation and suitably designed for disabled access.
The Tower Arts Project is funded by the Lottery ‘Awards for All’ and by Nottinghamshire County Council’s ‘Building Better Communities’ scheme.
